In Mississippi, your car donation only counts for this tax year if Magnolia Motors Gift, benefiting Heritage for the Blind, physically picks up your vehicle on or before December 31. The IRS goes by the pickup date, not the day you call or fill out the form. That means to lock in this year’s deduction, you should schedule your free pickup at least 3–5 business days before December 31 so our Monday–Saturday tow team can get your vehicle off your driveway in time.
We serve donors all across Mississippi—from Jackson, Ridgeland, Madison, and Clinton to Gulfport, Biloxi, and Ocean Springs on the Coast; from Hattiesburg, Laurel, and Meridian to Oxford, Tupelo, and Southaven in North Mississippi. We’ll tow your vehicle free, even if it’s not running, has failed inspection, or hasn’t moved in years. After your car sells, you’ll get a written acknowledgment, and for vehicles over $500, an IRS Form 1098-C for your records. But the tax year that matters is the year we pick it up. If you want your deduction this year, start now—our year-end pickup slots in Mississippi fill up fast.
Your year-end donation timeline
Start your 2-minute donation form or call
2 minutesProvide your contact info, vehicle details, and Mississippi pickup address (home, work, or storage). It takes about two minutes. The sooner you contact Magnolia Motors Gift, the more likely we can book a pickup before December 31 for this year’s deduction.
Choose your ideal pickup window
5 minutesOur team operates Monday–Saturday throughout Mississippi, including the holiday season. Tell us days and time windows that work in places like Jackson, Gulfport, Hattiesburg, Oxford, or your town. Aim to schedule 3–5 business days before December 31 so we can confirm a qualifying pickup date.
Confirm your Dec 31 tax-year pickup date
5 minutesWe’ll call, text, or email with your tow date. To count for this tax year, your vehicle must be physically picked up by December 31. Once you confirm that date and location, your deduction year is locked in—as long as the tow truck completes the pickup on schedule.
Prepare your keys and title (if available)
10 minutesGather your keys and title if you have it; in many Mississippi cases we can guide you even if your title is misplaced. No inspection, repairs, or cleaning needed. The tow driver handles the paperwork at pickup while you keep a copy for your records.
Free tow, then tax receipt after sale
After pickupWe tow your vehicle free—running or not—from your Mississippi location. The IRS counts your donation as of that pickup date. After your car sells, Magnolia Motors Gift sends a written acknowledgment, and for vehicles over $500, IRS Form 1098-C for your itemized deduction.
Year-end tax deduction facts
Donation year = pickup date
For IRS purposes, your car donation counts on the date the charity takes possession of your vehicle. If Magnolia Motors Gift picks up your car on or before December 31 in Mississippi, it applies to this tax year.
Form 1098-C for $500+ vehicles
If your donated vehicle sells for more than $500, Heritage for the Blind will provide IRS Form 1098-C. This form shows the gross sale price and is used to substantiate your deduction when you itemize on Schedule A.
Written acknowledgment after sale
Your written acknowledgment, including IRS Form 1098-C where required, is mailed after the vehicle is sold. Even though the letter comes later, your deduction year is still based on the pickup date, not the sale date.
Itemizing on Schedule A
To use your Magnolia Motors Gift car donation as a deduction, you must itemize deductions on Schedule A of your federal return. If you use the standard deduction only, you generally cannot claim the vehicle donation.
30-day IRS receipt timing rule
For most vehicle donations, the charity must send Form 1098-C or a similar acknowledgment within 30 days of the sale. Keep this with your tax records as proof of the deduction and the vehicle’s final sale value.
